Chapter Twenty-One

There are twice as many people in the courtyard and on the hallway walls as there was last night. It seems like the whole city is outside today, and they are crowded in every space available.

“Elizabeth, are all these people going to be greeting us today?” I ask her, thinking it was going to be a never-ending day.

“No, most will return to their jobs and such, but a good many of them will,” she tells me from her chair. “Are you ready?”

“I think so,” I tell her, still looking out. I see Lindon and Tate in the crowd out in front and am glad to see them. They can’t see me, and I wonder what they must be thinking right about now.

“It's not as bad as you think. There are so many who help run this place. The hardest part is always having everyone watching you.”

I turn back to her and see Jacob and Fin approaching us. He wears a complete formal dark blue suit now, but at least this one fits him.

I am wearing a lovely dress Belinda had brought to me. It is a pale blue form-fitting gown with a blue lace sleeve. Another older woman quickly did my hair back in a pretty yet simple style. Everything was rushed for today, which wasn’t normal, but there was an urgency in Elizabeth to have this done as soon as possible.

“Well, look at you, Sir Dandy,” I say, straightening his collar even though it didn’t need straightening. I just want to touch him.

“Just know that this suit is a one-time event,” he tells me, and then he asks. “have you seen Lindon and Tate?”

“They are right out front,” I say. “I’m glad I can see them.”

“Gods, look at all these people!” He says, looking outside for the first time.

“I know. Are you sure you still want to do this?”

“Me and you, right?” He asks, putting his arm around me. “As long as I’m not doing it alone.”

“Okay, listen up,” the bishop calls for all our attention. “I will go first, make the official announcement of the coronation, and then announce the queen. Queen Elizabeth, you come out then.”

He turns to me, “Princess Celine, wait until I announce you, and then join your sister.”

He turns to Jacob then, “Sir, you step out with the princess as an escort but don’t join her when I call forth for the crowning. Once I announce you, the royal crown will be brought forth. You will join the new queen then, and she will place it on your head. I will then bless you both as the new queen and king. You will wave and greet the crowd before going inside.”

He turns and speaks with a small boy who is holding a red pillow with the king’s crown on top. It is large and made of gold, with blue sapphires interspersed within. I remember seeing it when I was younger in the royal jewels room my mother had taken me and Elizabeth to when she was preparing for a party.
